COMING ABOUT/ TACKING
A switch of tack ,where the bow turns through the wind. the whole manoeuvre is a turn which begins and ends on a close hauled course. The art of a good tack is to maintain as much speed as possible. You can achieve this by turning slowly, using the rudder little and letting the jib flap as shortly as possible.
TACKING IN 4 STEPS:
- 1 Ready about: Check if there is room on the windward side:
-head up to close hauled - crew prepares jibsheet (out of clamp)
- 2 Lee-ho: Head up (slowly, tiller toward the boom)
- 3 Jib over (release jib) when the mainsail switches sides (in irons):
- Helmsman moves to the other side,
- Bear away (slowly)
- Release the old jibsheet
- Pull in the new jibsheet (without tension )
When the ship is almost on the new close hauled: - center the tiller to stop the turn.
- 4 Trim jib
when the ship is on the right close hauled again; Trim the jibsheet. (slowly)
