RUDDER CONTROL

As a helmsman, always sit on the windward side (or the high side) of the boat.

Luffing always means moving the tiller away from you and bearing away always means moving the tiller towards you. After some time this will become automatic and natural . Steer straight ahead by looking alongside the mast and forestay to the background. Practice both short and gentle turns. Try to use the helm relaxed  little as possible and slowly. Also practice steering with your body. To do this, take the tiller under your arm. This will give you two hands free to quickly control the sheet. Make sure that the rudder position remains the same when luffing. Aggressive use of the helm can be useful to quickly stop the boat for example with a turn into irons.
